Police and Crime Commissioner, Darryl Preston is setting up the first AI Ethics Advisory Panel for policing in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The Panel, the first of its kind in the county, is being developed to provide independent, multidisciplinary scrutiny and advice on the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) within Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Its purpose is to support transparent, accountable, and proportionate use of AI, while maintaining public trust and confidence.

We are looking to bring together a diverse group of professionals with expertise in areas such as:

• AI and data science
• Law and ethics
• Information security
• Safeguarding and public protection
• Policing and criminal justice
• Community and public interest perspectives

The Panel will operate in an advisory capacity, providing independent insight and recommendations with feedback recorded and any actions monitored by the Commissioner’s office.

We are keen to attract individuals with appropriate and relevant experience and perspectives to contribute to robust and balanced ethical scrutiny.

A draft Terms of Reference has been developed in line with national guidance from the College of Policing and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) setting out the proposed purpose, scope, and operation of the Panel.

The Terms of Reference document has been intentionally created in draft form so that Panel members can use their expertise to make sure it is informed by professional experience and emerging best practice.

The OPCC are planning on hosting an introductory session in the Autumn once we have gathered some initial interest, to provide further context on the Panel’s role and ambitions, discuss the draft Terms of Reference and invite discussion and feedback ahead of the Panel being formally established.
