FIREARMS LICENSING SERVICE UPDATE
The BCH Firearms & Explosives Licensing team has provided a list of frequently asked questions in respond to the current backlog of license applications.
Frequently asked questions:
Why is there a backlog of applications to be approved?
Following a national review in 2021, the BCH Firearms Licensing team carried out a comprehensive evaluation of its own processes and implemented improvements. These changes have resulted in the department receiving the highest assurance rating from an external audit dealing with risk but has also meant it is taking longer to complete checks and approve applications.
What is being done to resolve this?
Additional resources have been invested into the department to clear the backlog.
How long is the current wait for applications to be approved?
Wait times vary depending on the complexity of each application. Recent additional resourcing is bringing wait times down. This is currently in the region of 9 months for a renewal application and 12 months for a grant application.
If I applied before the new fee came into effect, but my application is not approved until after, what fee will I be charged?
Firearms license fees changed on 5 February 2025. All applicants who applied before this date will be charged according to the previous fee structure.
How far in advance of my expiry date can I apply to renew my certificate?
You can apply up to 6 months in advance of your expiry date. Our team send reminder letters at 20 weeks and then 10 weeks prior to expiry.
Will my application be processed faster if I need my certificates for work?
We do endeavour to prioritise applications that are livelihood related. If this applies, please make a note of this on your application form or contact us through the online contact form.
