POLICE and Crime Commissioner, Darryl Preston, is today (23rd August) thanking people for sharing their views on crime and disorder as he produces a new Police and Crime Plan for the county.

1,363 people expressed their views on the draft priorities and shared their experiences of reporting crime and accessing support services.

Under an overall banner of ‘safe communities’, the priorities were grouped into four broad themes:

  • Early Intervention and prevention - working with police and partners to keep communities safe;
  • Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour – including issues such as road safety, rural crime, and business crime;
  • Supporting Victims and Witnesses - ensuring victims of crime have access to support services, and:
  • Building trust and confidence.

“The majority of people responding, (over 90%), either strongly agreed or agreed with the draft priorities outlined in the survey and 738 went on to provide optional comments,” said Darryl.

“As Commissioner, one of my most important roles is to listen to the public therefore I am pleased to see so many people taking the time to tell me their views.

“It was reassuring to read that the majority of those responding agree with the priority areas I proposed in the survey. These are a deliberate continuation of priorities included in my previous Plan so I can progress the vital work achieved so far with partners to keep our communities safe.”

Police and Crime Plans set out policing priorities in each police force area, telling the public how crime and disorder will be reduced, how policing resources are allocated and how progress on priorities will be funded and reported.

Questions included in the survey, which was open for four weeks across July and August, focused on whether people agreed with the above themes.

Victims of crime were also invited to provide feedback on their experiences of reporting crimes and support services.

“While the online survey is now closed, I would like to remind people that I am always happy to find time to discuss your concerns on a one-to-one basis,” added Darryl.

“If there are any issues raised in the survey that you would like to discuss further, please contact my office on 0300 333 3456 or email [email protected].

Over the next few weeks, the Commissioner's Team will be reviewing the responses and preparing a draft Police and Crime Plan.

The Plan is expected to be published later in the year.
