Time to Talk day: Sir Graham Bright encourages people to talk about mental health concerns
NATIONAL Time to talk Day on 5th February will be a chance for stigma to be dispelled by encouraging open conversations with people about mental health. Cambridgeshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Sir Graham Bright, is supporting the initiative by raising awareness of the links between domestic abuse and mental health.
Commenting on Time to Talk day, Sir Graham said “Research shows that women with mental health concerns are around two and a half times more likely to have suffered domestic violence than those without. Likewise, men with mental health disorders are at a higher risk of domestic violence. I remain committed to protecting the safety of all those in Cambridgeshire, particularly the most vulnerable members of society. I would encourage everyone to take five minutes on Time to Talk day to have a conversation about mental health.”
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner in Cambridgeshire has funded four posts to offer specialist support to victims of domestic abuse and other crimes that may also be experiencing mental health issues.
Sir Graham adds, “Support for Victims is available now and ready for you to use. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Community Psychiatric Nurses are based with domestic abuse support services throughout the county and within the Victim’s Hub, to make sure that appropriate help is offered to people seeking support. Time to Talk day brings valuable support like this to the attention of the general public.
Sir Graham has been proactive since his appointment as Police and Crime Commissioner in implementing a range of initiatives to safe guard vulnerable people with mental health issues (including under age people) and remains committed to working with Cambridgeshire Constabulary and other local, regional and national stakeholders that hold the necessary specialist knowledge, skills and expertise in this important area.
