Police donate bikes to Romsey Mill to help young people gain skills

CAMBRIDGESHIRE CONSTABULARY have donated a number of bikes to help young people at Romsey Mill in Cambridge learn new skills.

The bikes, which were found abandoned and unclaimed in Cambridge were delivered last week to help the charity start up a new restoration enterprise.

The Charity engages with vulnerable and at risk young people offering a number of activities including open access youth clubs, music and performance sessions, skating and biking activities, alternative education courses, and trips.

Staff at Romsey Mill work with the Youth Offending Service, social care and other professionals to support young people through challenging circumstances and help their transformation. The charity offers one to one support to identify barriers in their lives and help them overcome their issues with targeted work.

Ollie O’Meakin, Youth Development Worker for Shelfords, Stapleford & Sawston explains:

“Romsey Mill recently ran a project in which a young person restored an old bike and sold it on with the money reinvested into Romsey Mill. There are a number of other young people demonstrating real skills in maintenance and restoration so we would love to be able to build their confidence in the same way.”

“We can’t thank the police enough for this donation – it will go a long way to aid the development and support of our young people. It also demonstrates how much the police believe in our young people and are willing to invest in them.”

Sarah Morgan, Engagement Officer for the Police and Crime Commissioner, who helped organise the donation added:

“I know the force is delighted to be able to help the charity in this way – it’s an excellent way to encourage young people to give something back to the community supporting them.”
