Commissioner funds ‘Coming into Care’ packs for young people in Peterborough

THE Children in Care Council (CIC Council) are to receive a £3,000 grant from Acting Police and Crime Commissioner, Ray Bisby’s Youth and Community Fund to support children and young people entering care.

The money will be used to purchase ‘Coming into Care’ packs.

Made up of young people from Peterborough who are in or leaving care, the CIC Council work with Peterborough City Council to ensure that those entering or leaving care are fully supported and informed throughout the process.

“This is a project that is particularly close to my heart. As someone who has dealt closely with the care system myself, I understand that it can be a truly daunting, confusing and stressful change for children and young people,” explains Acting Police and Crime Commissioner, Ray Bisby.

“Along with essential toiletries, the care packs will include key information about the care system, signpost young people to support services and provide contact details for the CIC Council and youth club. Entering care can be an isolating experience and it is vital that young people know where they can meet with others who have had shared experiences.”

Within each Coming into Care pack are young person can expect to find:

  • essential hygiene items such as toothbrush, deodorant and sanitary items.
  • Personal comfort and educational materials such as colouring books, journals, toys.
  • Welcome letter from the CIC Council and an introduction to the care system including the different workers that they will be introduced to and what their role is.

The Commissioner’s Youth and Community Fund, now in its 5th year, supports young people to actively participate and contribute where they live, helping them to become active members of their community and lead more fulfilling lives.

The Fund is open to voluntary and community organisations who can apply for grants of up to £3,000 towards their project. More information about the terms and conditions of the funding can be found here.
